What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are prosthetic roots and teeth. The roots of dental implants usually consist of titanium, which is an extremely durable and lightweight metal. Dental implants work for people who want to:

  • Replace missing teeth without grinding down their adjacent teeth, which will be necessary with a dental bridge.
  • Prevent the bone loss that often comes with extended denture use.
  • Treat or prevent the joint pain that can come when their remaining teeth shift into the spaces left by missing teeth.
  • Restore their smile.
  • Recover their ability to chew and speak properly.
  • Get a bridge or denture. Dental implants can provide support for these as well.
The Implantation Process
Our Burbank dental implants specialists will complete the implantation procedure over the course of several visits to our offices. They will begin by taking scans and impressions of your jaw and teeth to assess the spacing in your bone and gums. They will then perform surgery to implant the titanium post in the bone under the gums. This implant will require a healing time of between two and six months. An abutment and crown will be fitted to the post over the course of one to two months. Good dental hygiene and regular visits to your dentist are essential for the long-term success of your dental implants.

Dental Implants vs. Dentures

Modern dentures are durable and can last for many years if they are properly cared for; however, they will require repair and readjustments due to wear. In comparison, dental implants are more permanent and offer many of the same benefits as natural teeth.

Cone Beam 3D Scans
As noted above, it will be necessary to evaluate the patient’s jaws and remaining teeth. Modern technology has provided a variety of diagnostic options such as two-dimensional panoramic films and the more advanced Cone Beam 3D scans that enable your facial bones to be scanned while delivering lower doses of radiation.

Most patients will get a traditional panoramic scan, which is a two-dimensional tomogram of their facial bones. In some cases, more information will be needed which is where the Cone Beam 3D scan becomes necessary. The Cone scan provides doctors with information that is considerably more detailed, though it is somewhat more expensive. Some patients can benefit from a Cone Beam scan based on the information from their panoramic scan, while others just skip the panoramic scan altogether and just go with the Cone Beam scan.

While this information may seem overly technical, it is beneficial for patients who want to make educated decisions with regard to their treatment.

Our practice is focused on helping you to maintain or recover your smile and on eliminating tooth pain. Our professional, caring staff is fully committed to providing you with the care that you deserve.
